Jan 26^th – Veng Viang to Luang Prabang

We were glad that photos of the mountains opposite our hotel were taken last night as this morning they’re covered in cloud.

Mr Ken and Mr Noi arrived at 08:30 and we took off for the local caves. Needless to say, it was raining as we walked up some very steep steps to the caves entrance. We had to wait for the caretaker to come and open up and put the lights on. The caves have some stalactites and stalagmites that are quite impressive, but this is not a huge cave system like Cheddar Gorge or similar. It was used over time for the locals to hide in during violent times. The cave was very still and dry looking. We questioned Mr Ken about this and he said that they grew during the wet season.

We headed onwards towards Luang Prabang crashing over potholes for probably the first 10kms out of Vang Vieng. At a village Mr Ken asked us if we wanted to get out and stroll around. As it was still raining a lot we declined. So, we continued. At some point we turned off the main highway and headed into the hills as the scenery, from what we could glimpse through the clouds was quite stunning. Sadly we climbed up into the clouds so the stunning views were hidden from us. If we can, we might change one of activities and go back.

We rejoined the main highway and were soon on the outskirts of Luang Prabang. Mr Ken told us that it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and as such they control what can and can’t be built and in what style. The result is that there are no buildings over 3 storeys and all in a colonial style. We didn’t see too much of that in the rain, but I’m sure we will tomorrow. We parked outside a restaurant and got out into 9C!! We then had lunch in an open restaurant while cupping our hands around a hot cup of tea. As we left Mr Ken asked if we wanted to walk to our hotel as it was close. We declined as he said it was 1 minute away and it was still raining. In reality it was less than 20m and made us feel like Two Jags Prescott!!

Villa Santi is close to the main streets and the action of the night markets. We’re in the annex across the road and Tamsin and I have been upgraded to a Junior suite. The good news is, they have blankets!!!
